HISTORY OF NICHOLS EQUIPMENT

Our roots run deep. It started in Connecticut , when in the late 1930's Grandpa Nichols changed the focus of Nichols Garage from automotive service to lawn mower sales and service. A recent invention was catching on, a gas powered machine that would cut the grass with a rotary blade. It was there that Grandpa's son, Bob, learned how to repair lawn mowers and gas engines, mowers like Reo and Porter Cable.

Bob moved to Jacksonville in 1949 where he was employed as a math and science teacher at Bolles School and worked part time across the street at San Jose Country Club, keeping the club's mowers and reels in good condition.

In 1954, Bob cleared land on Beach Blvd, and built the original (30'x40') building (where the sales counter is located today) which opened later that year as Southside Lawn Equipment. Bob opened fully stocked with six mowers, three Toro's on top of 3 empty boxes which the mowers came shipped in. Beach Blvd was two lanes wide and Jacksonville was growing.

Nichols continued to grow and flourish with Jacksonville. In 1962, Gravely was added to the lineup. Over the years Nichols has represented names such as Snapper, Weed Eater (the original electric line trimmer), Stihl, Honda and more.

Present owner Gary, started working at Nichols in 1971 as a service tech and was service manager at Bob's passing in 1978. Nichols Equipment proudly holds the title of the oldest family run outdoor power equipment dealer in north Florida, serving you for 64 continuous years.
